Can West Ham United Go Past Frankfurt?

West Ham travels to Deutsche Bank Park for the second leg of the Europa League semi-final, having lost 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt after their first-leg tie in London last week. German police said a group of West Ham supporters were attacked ahead of the second leg on Wednesday, and one was taken to hospital after a minor accident. West Ham was stunned in the first minute as Ansgar Knauff gave Frankfurt the lead in their first European club semi-final in 46 years. After finishing sixth in the Premier League last season, many wondered if West Ham could maintain the same level of performance this time around.

However, the Hammers have struggled over the past few weeks due to their busy season and lack of team depth, leaving many wondering how long they can stay on the bench during the final push. Eintracht Frankfurt aims to reach the European final for the first time since winning their last European trophy in the 1980 UEFA Cup (against Mönchengladbach). Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Lindstrom was injured after England’s 2-1 first-leg win last week and was handed a Bundesliga defeat against Bayer 04 Bayer Leverkusen on Monday. West Ham will take on Germany’s team in the second leg of the 2021-2 Europa League Cup, losing 2-1 at London. Frankfurt police confirmed that they had to intervene “in various locations” the night before due to conflicts among rival supporters. According to the police, supporters of both teams were hunting for a fight in several spots, and they were obliged to put a halt to serious altercations near the main railway station.

Eintracht Frankfurt has no chance of finishing in European qualifiers, dropping to 11th in the standings with two games remaining and focusing only on the Europa League campaign. Eintracht Frankfurt moved ahead with 22 of 25 previous games in two major European UEFA competitions when they won their first leg and never gave up after winning their first away match (6/6). West Ham won their first Europa League game against Sevilla this season, and Hammers defender Thomas Soucek thinks he can be sure of it.

The last group to qualify for the final Europa League after losing the first leg of the semi-final was Liverpool in 2015-16 (3-1 mixed against Villarreal). West Ham United and Rangers should both overcome first-leg deficits against German opponents on Thursday if they are to reach the Europa League final. At the same time, Leicester City travels to Italy to deny Jose Mourinho’s Roma a spot in the Europa Conference League’s inaugural final. Eintracht Frankfurt holds the advantage as they prepare to play West Ham after winning the first leg of their semi-final series 2-1 in London the other week. They defeated Barcelona in the last eight and aim for their first European final since beating Borussia Moenchengladbach to win the UEFA Cup in 1980.
